Is Josh Heupel Among Best Coaches In SEC With October Wins?
Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

Few SEC head coaches have experienced the type of instantaneous success on the gridiron that Tennessee’s Josh Heupel has in Knoxville. Between Heupel’s 20-9 record in two-plus seasons with the Vols and his ability to lead Tennessee to the program’s first New Year’s Six bowl game a year ago, there’s been no shortage of adulation for the 45-year-old South Dakota native in the South. We briefly pause from Tennessee sportsbooks to bring you the best coaches in the SEC for the month of October.

Heupel On Fast Course To Success With Tennessee

Among all qualifying SEC coaches, Heupel’s 13-5 record and subsequent .722 win percentage rank fourth overall — sandwiched between No. 3 Hugh Freeze of Auburn (.725) and Florida’s Billy Napier (.706). Overall, Nick Saban of Alabama is the SEC’s October win percentage leader, at .812, while his former defensive coordinator (Kirby Smart of Georgia) is No. 2 at .739. Conversely, Heupel ranks ahead of Napier as well as Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher (.660), Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss (.600), Missouri’s Elijah Drinkwitz (.563), Mark Stoops of Kentucky (.460) and Sam Pittman of Arkansas (.417) on the SEC October win percentage leaderboard.

With Tennessee slated to host 2-2 South Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Central time on Saturday, the Vols’ will likely be counted on to be 4-1 entering October play. That’s certainly the take from oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook Tennessee, who have Heupel and company at –12.5 against the Gamecocks on Saturday evening. As for October, the Vols will play Texas A&M (at home on Oct. 14), Alabama (on the road on Oct. 21), and Kentucky (on the road on Oct. 28) during the 10th month of the year. With the right mix of good luck and good play, Heupel and company should be able to build upon their strong October results of late — beginning with that Neyland Stadium showdown against the Aggies on Oct. 14.
