Don’t you dare wake up the Vanderbilt Commodores. They’re still enjoying their dream season after beating Missouri 17-10 on Saturday in a game that brought the ESPN College GameDay crew to Nashville.
Vandy, at 7-1 and 3-1 in the SEC, is now No. 9 in the current Associated Press Top 25. That’s the school’s highest ranking since the Commodores were as high as seventh in the media poll in 1937. That team did not go to a bowl. Clark Lea’s team most certainly will, but the Commodores have playoff aspirations in mind.

Vandy’s playoff odds just got a lot shorter, which is a good thing. The Commodores still have a wide fluctuation regarding their bowl picture, but a win at Texas this Saturday in Austin would go a long way in cementing a spot in the final 12.
Provided the Commodores avoid upsets at home against Auburn and Kentucky, that would set up the biggest game ever between the Commodores and Tennessee. It could be a de facto playoff game for the rivals, or it could possibly help the Commodores earn a top-four CFP seed and a trip to the biggest bowl game in school history.
DraftKings Tennessee Sportsbook has Vanderbilt priced at +125 to make the playoff. That means a $100 wager would return a $125 profit if it wins. However, as life in the SEC goes, the Commodores have a tough schedule ahead, and Texas and Tennessee will also be fighting to stay in playoff contention.
Losses to Texas and Tennessee could find the Commodores potentially staying home and playing in the Music City Bowl. Vandy would likely also be considered for the Duke’s Mayo and the Gator bowl, but that might depend on the number of bowl-eligible teams the SEC has. The league currently has nine schools with at least six wins.
