One of the hottest names at the MLB trade deadline is a former Tennessee Volunteer, with fourth year southpaw Garrett Crochet appearing set to change teams ahead of July 30, thanks to the Chicago White Sox’ yearlong struggle on the diamond.
Crochet, who played for the Vols’ from 2018 to 2020, was a first round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft before being used by the South Siders as a reliever from 2020 to 2023, with the club moving him into the rotation for the first time this season.
Safe to say, it’s worked out well for the Sox, with Crochet posting a 6-8 record for a team that’s 50 games under .500, with a 3.23 ERA and 4.1 WAR in 111.1 innings pitched, leading to the 25-year-old being one of the most ballyhooed names across Tennessee sports betting in this year’s trade deadline discourse.
At BetTennessee.com, we developed odds to see where he will move next. As of now, ESPN insiders believe a move to the Dodgers is inevitable – though some still believe the Sox will use Crochet in the offseason to raise bids.
Team | Odds | Percent Chance |
Los Angeles Dodgers | -150 | 60.0% |
Chicago White Sox | +250 | 28.6% |
Philadelphia Phillies | +1800 | 5.3% |
The Field | +1550 | 6.1% |

Given Crochet’s salary ($800,000 in 2024) and proven prowess in the rotation and out of the bullpen, it’s safe to say that the southpaw will be a hot commodity over the next couple days, with teams that have deep farm systems like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies being the preliminary frontrunners right now.
Our hypothetical Crochet odds board has the Dodgers (-150) and Phillies (+1800) as the only outside contenders to land Crochet, while the odds that he stays on the White Sox past the July 30 deadline sit at +250. The Dodgers are heavy favorites to land Crochet, as they need starting pitching help to make their annual October run. Clayton Kershaw made his season debut last week, though it remains to be seen how much they can depend on the future Hall of Famer this time around.
For now, the baseball world is forced to sit back and wait to see what White Sox GM Chris Getz opts to do with Crochet, as there will be a host of teams that are ready to do whatever it takes to land the former UT starter in 2024.
